Game Analysis
This week 11 SEC matchup features two teams heading in opposite directions of late, as the Kentucky Wildcats host the 8th ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. Kentucky enters this game at 6-3, as they were finally able to break a 3 game losing streak last week, while Alabama enters at 8-1 and looks like the Crimson Tide that we are used to seeing under Nick Saban. Kentucky has struggled at home as of late, and they will be hungry to change those fortunes this week, although this will be their toughest test yet.
Let’s take a look at the visiting Crimson Tide first. It feels weird to say this about an Alabama team, but for a big part of the season it feels like they were overlooked, and not really part of the national playoff conversation. However, it seems like QB Jalen Milroe, perhaps the biggest question mark, has finally found his stride as a true dual threat quarterback. Last week in a 42-28 win against LSU, he completed over 60% of his passes for 219 yards, and added 155 yards on the ground along with an absurd 4 rushing touchdowns. This is the formula this offense needs to be successful and they are finally figuring that out. The defense struggled early against an explosive LSU offense, but really figured it out in the second half and pulled away for a big win. This team is still undefeated in SEC play, and should be able to make it to the SEC title game, where they’d likely take on Georgia. If they win out, they should feel pretty good about making the college football playoffs once again.
On the other side, the hosting Kentucky Wildcats finally snapped a 3 game losing streak last week, following a 5-0 start, with a 24-3 win at Mississippi State. As the score suggests, the defense absolutely dominated in that one, giving up under 150 passing yards and not much on the ground either. They also had a big pick six in the second quarter to take a commanding lead, which they would never give up. QB Devin Leary threw for 2 touchdowns, and RB Ray Davis added a score on the ground along with 80 rushing yards. However, with the rhythm Alabama has found, I don’t believe the Wildcats have shown they have the firepower to keep up, and I think Alabama will keep rolling in this one on their way to another SEC title game.
