Hawkeyes fans are hoping this matchup is the start of a new era, where their offense doesn’t waste their elite defense, and ultimately hold this team back from their potential. Their first chance to see their new QB Cade McNamara, a transfer from Michigan, will be on Saturday when they host Utah State in Iowa City. Utah State will also be looking to continue the run they had to end last season, when they finished 5-1 over their last 6 games to get them into a bowl game. However, Kinnick Stadium is an incredibly tough environment for road teams, and I think that will be too much to overcome in this game for the Utah State Aggies.

Utah State certainly has some question marks coming into this year, after losing their top WR Brian Cobbs and top RB Calvin Tyler, and not adding anything exciting in the transfer portal. Having a senior QB however, is always a good place to start, and that’s what the Aggies have in QB Cooper Legas. This defense is certainly not great, but did receive more help from the transfer portal than the offense did. Their first test will be a very tough one in a raucous stadium.

Iowa really is a team to keep an eye on this season, as their defense remains elite, following a season in which they were ranked 2nd in the nation in both scoring and total defense. The defense still has CB Cooper DeJean, who is a future NFL cornerback and arguably the best player on the team. The key to their whole season though is the offense, which has a new look at QB this year with Cade McNamara, after a mediocre couple seasons with QB Spencer Petras. McNamara comes over as a transfer from Michigan, and he brings with him another weapon for the offense, in Michigan transfer TE Erick All. This is a team known for developing tight ends, so that will be a big add for them as well. This offense doesn’t necessarily have to be great, but they have to be significantly better than last year if Iowa wants to make a run, as last year’s defense allowed under 13.5 points per game, yet the team still finished with only an 8-5 record. Luckily for Hawkeyes fans, I think they’ll like what they see in this year’s team to start the season, as I expect Iowa’s offense to score enough to run away with this game, and their defense will lockdown as usual.
