What a way to open up the season for both of these teams. A battle of the Michigans. I will say that one of these Michigan schools is part of the Big Ten, and thus one could be considered at least a little bit better than the other. I would also like to point out however that nothing happens the way we expect in rivalry games, especially when they both belong to the same State. I also know that opening games are a wildcard in themselves, as was showcased by everyone’s lowest-rated football team UMass somehow winning their opening game. I still expect this game to not be incredibly close, but you just can’t rule anything out.

Central Michigan is an alright football team. Last season they beat the teams they were supposed to beat and lost to teams they were supposed to lose to for the most part. Even the games they did lose though, the games against some solid college programs, were close ones. They only lost to Penn State by 19 and to Toledo by 21. Additionally, Michigan State and Central Michigan played some similar opponents last year and you’d be surprised how similarly they fared against those opponents. For instance, they both beat up Akron and while Central Michigan didn’t beat Western Michigan, they came pretty darn close. And yes, I know that just because two teams both beat up bad teams doesn’t make them equals, but it’s gotta count for at least something.

As I’ve stated already, Michigan State does have a better football program between these two schools. When it comes to this game the only thing that can derail the Spartans from the W would be something flukey happening. The competition that Michigan State plays every year is nowhere near the level that Central Michigan faces. And like the old saying goes iron does sharpen iron. There’s a reason why my travel middle school team doesn’t ever play the Boston Celtics. Because who would pay money to watch Jayson Tatum dunk on a kid? Actually, now that I’ve said that, I would definitely pay to watch Jayson Tatum just posterize a sixth grade. But that’s all beside the point. The point is that Michigan State handily beat Penn State, a team that Central Michigan got beat up by. And I’m not saying that the transitive property is the end-all, be-all for predicting game scorelines, it also doesn’t lie about them.

Michigan State is the better team, but anything can happen on opening weekend. Bet on either team and get your extra $200 in bet credits.
