I love what the Atlanta Falcons are building. They have Desmond Ridder apprenticing for at least the first six games of the year, they signed the most athletic receiver in the draft in Drake London, and I don’t need to tell you about Kyle Pitts. Matt Ryan might still have a little in the tank, but he would turn into a corpse behind Atlanta’s offensive line for another year. In Marcus Mariota, the Falcons have a respectable quarterback that can make running the option…an option. Cordarrelle Patterson will spend another year being the Falcons’ best weapon, but they are quietly collecting an arsenal that would make Kyle Rittenhouse jealous. On defense, the Falcons are also beginning to have an Adele-esque glow-up. In their secondary, no cornerback duo heading into 2022 gave up fewer yards last season than Casey Hayward and A.J. Terrell, who combined to allow only 588 yards. And while their defensive line still won’t be anything close to other lines in the NFC South, they did bring in Lorenzo Carter and Arnold Ebiketie on the edge.
The Saints will be better than everyone expects them to be this year. Everyone can laugh at Jameis all they want, but he had by far and away his best season in the pros last year. Jameis works harder than any other quarterback in the league. With Alvin Kamara again by his side, I expect New Orleans to have two of the most underrated players going into this season as Batman and Robin. Michael Thomas will be playing football for the first time since the damn Vietnam war ended, the Saints acquired Jarvis Landry, and experts expect the young guys on the front five to have breakout years. And let’s not forget about their defense. The fact that the Saints were able to completely overhaul their safety room for the next three seasons by getting Tyrann Mathieu and Marcus Maye for less per year combined than Minkah Fitzpatrick and Jamal Adams make individually was one of the biggest free agency wins of the offseason. Vegas likes New Orleans -5.5, but they will win by about ten points. Atlanta has no chance of establishing the run on the Saints’ defense, and Jameis Winston is poised for his biggest game since he was eating crab legs down in Tallahassee.
